Monsoon Magazine's
Guidelines
Monsoon welcomes unsolicited
submissions of unpublished artwork, autobiographical sketches, essays, fiction,
interviews, photography, poetry, reviews, and translations ranging from earthy to
experimental. We consider manuscripts year-round and will reply on a first-received,
first-read basis. As an electronic journal, we prefer e-mail or computer-file submissions,
either as text in the e-mail or as an MS Word Document. However, post-marked submissions
will also be considered.
E-mail submissions to: submissions@monsoonmag.com
or mail submissions to:Monsoon Magazine, P.O. Box 44575, Eden Prairie, MN 55344 USA.
Faxes will also be accepted at (419)
781-4002. Please include an e-mail address or
S.A.S.E. for a proper response.
ESSAYS, MEMOIRS, FICTION & POETRY
We are interested in vivid, compelling, and
unique writing that represents the spectrum of South Asian language and culture. Please
send no more than two prose pieces and/or one to five poems at a time. Prose and poetry
should be mailed separately. For regular mail submissions, Poems should be individually
typed either single or double-spaced on one side. Essays, memoirs, and fiction should be
typed double-spaced on one side of the page. Novel excerpts are also acceptable if they
are self-contained. There is no rigid limit on word length, although for pieces longer
than 3500 words we prefer an e-mail or computer-file submission.
TRANSLATIONS
Translations are welcome if permission has been
granted. Because of the vast array of languages in South Asia, we emphatically support and
encourage translations.
INTERVIEWS & REVIEWS
Please query with ideas before submitting
interviews or reviews. We seek interviews that will give our audience an insight into some
aspect of South Asia and the South Asian Diaspora. We are also interested in art
critiques, book reviews, exhibitions, poetry readings, etc.
ARTWORK & PHOTOGRAPHY
We are looking for high quality drawing,
painting, and photography that, in the broadest sense, fuses South Asia's ancient history
with the vibrant, pulsating South Asia of today. Photo essays and artist sketchbooks are
encouraged. Photography may be submitted in 35mm prints or digital form (photo CDs with
low and high resolution scans, etc). Artwork must be digitized or scannable.
COPYRIGHT
Authors retain all rights. Monsoon only asks for
one time electronic publishing rights and permission to include the author's work in their
annual print journal. No part of an author's work will be reproduced without prior
permission.
PAYMENT
Like most electronic journals, we are not a
paying magazine (at this point). Since Monsoon is just starting out, our budget can only
cover starting costs, etc. However, we anticipate that by next year we will be able to
give remuneration of some sort. We are also planning a print version of 'The Best of
Monsoon' at the end of Monsoon's first year, and will send free copies to those who have
been published in it. Until then, we hope that the quality of the magazine, and the chance
to create and participate in an on-going dialogue on South Asian literature/culture will
be incentive enough.
Expect two
weeks to two months for a decision (depending on the backlog). Although we have a small
staff, and anticipate quite a number of submissions, we are committed to considering each
submission. Simultaneous submissions are OK with us as long as they are indicated and we
are notified immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Please do not query us until two
months have passed, and if you do, please indicate the date of submission. We cannot
accommodate revisions, changes of return address, or forgotten S.A.S.E.'s after the fact.
We also cannot be responsible for loss or damage of your submissions.
NEVER SEND ORIGINALS OR YOUR ONLY COPY!
